Curtain Call: Computer Edition

Well, after yesterday's ranting, my computer finally went to its eternal resting place. It blue screen of death'd out, twice, and now won't come on. The power button does nothing and the reset button on the back makes it hum, but nothing happens. It's dead. Terrible timing, too.

So, I'm getting a new one. I ordered a Dell XPS 8300 last night. Matt's computer is a Dell XPS and he really likes it. This computer got really good reviews all around, so I'm looking forward to replacing my broken machine with one that works. What isn't awesome is that this is just one more thing that we've had to put money we couldn't afford to spend on. So, now all I can do is hope that Matt's computer doesn't start being an asshole, or that our fridge, washer, and dryer decide to survive, etc.  Thank goodness for credit, honestly, because otherwise the single most significant gadget in my life, my computer, wouldn't have been replaced.

So, there you have it. One more gripe about everything breaking to go with yesterdays tantrum about my computer's troubles. Now, I'm going to go do something and mope about my computer being dead, because frankly, I can't stand to look at my netbook any longer. The gray spots all over the monitor, which I think might be dust inside the screen, are just agitating me.

  1. Yay for a new and improved computer!

I don't know much about electricity, but since everything electrical seems to be shorting out, do you think the problem is in your wiring in the house?

  2. No, I don't think we have any electrical problems, except that there's a small short in the range hood. When I turn the light off, I can't immediately turn it back on. Otherwise, no issues.

I think, with everything breaking, it was just bad luck. The microwave had been making a horrible noise for a long time. The toaster had been erratically toasting for almost a year. The heater still comes on but the heating coils need replacing so it doesn't get hot. We blow through coffee pots like crazy because of our hot water, and the dishwasher never really worked right and hadn't gotten anything clean for a long time before I finished dying.

My computer is 4 years old, but it had been working just fine until I did the last video driver update. I'm not sure what that had to do with it, actually, but my computer went from fine to completely dead in about a span of two days. Terrible, terrible timing really because I have a thesis to write and my students papers are all electronic, which means I can't grade them until I get back to work next week.

I think it's a case of terrible, terrible timing and not much more. Still, it sucks.
